So You Think A Waterbed Is For You?
Water Mattresses vs. Conventional Mattresses

There are many considerations when deciding between purchasing a conventional mattress or a water mattress. Here is a point by point checklist of waterbed versus conventional bed characteristics to help aid you in your pursuit of comfort and happiness.

WATER MATTRESSES SPRING MATTRESSES
Life Span With proper care and maintenance can last 10-15 years, and will NEVER sag With proper care lasts up to 5-6 years, and begin sagging almost immediately with normal usage
Heating Heating Systems cause tremendous therapeutic and sleep quality benefits (kept constant by thermostat control) Only way to achieve similar heating is by heating blanket but heat is not evenly distributed and constant
Lumbar Support Lumbar Systems can be added directly to the water containment chamber for added mid-region support Also have lumbar support features in more expensive models
Comfort Control By using a Dual Bladder or Tube System each side can be personalized to individual preferences; Motion Control, Firmness, Lumbar Support, Temperature Feature side personalization but only between soft, semi-soft and firm
Mattress Sizing Come in many different sizes: Hard-Sides – California King, California Queen and Super Single; Soft-Sides – Conventional sizing Feature only conventional sizing
Maintenance Require occasional wiping with approved vinyl cleaners (3-4 times yearly), as well as a water conditioner treatment every 6 months Require no real maintenance except for turning/flipping when sagging becomes apparent
Linens and Furniture Special sized furniture and/or linens are needed for Hard-Sided mattresses Use only conventional linens and furniture
Maintenance Costs Special kits that include cleaner and conditioner for maintenance will be necessary No real maintenance costs
Heating Costs $100-200/year to heat the mattress depending on the size and desired temperature settings No heating costs
Insurance Insurance may be required for possible water damage in some homes/apartments No insurance ever required
Moving Once filled, the bed becomes stationary until drained due to extreme weight; however, once drained, the bed is much easier to move than traditional mattresses Never permanent, can always be moved, although always awkward and difficult
Sleep Effects Aids Insomnia and other sleep disorders by eliminating pressure points and applying maintained heat; helps total relaxation Actually add to pressure points (especially firmer beds) causing more tossing and turning, or disturbed sleep
Musculoskeletal Effects Musculoskeletal conditions (backache/arthritis, etc.) aided by elimination of pressure points and application of heat by lowering blood pressure, improving circulation and relaxing joints and muscles Again, cause pressure points and therefore cause more aches and pains
Bed Sores Eliminates bed sores by eliminating pressure points and improving circulation with heat A common cause of bed sores for the bedridden or immobile
Hygiene Eliminates dust mites in and on the bed with non-porous vinyl mattress and washable coverings Acts as a breeding ground for dust mites
